Super Hero

This is my super hero design task I did as a Summer Learning Journey task. I used jamboard to jot down my ideas for this project then I used Craiyon Ai to help make my imagination become a reality, my super hero has the ability to look into the unknown future and the power to control the fierce lightning, her eyes glow from the lightning that surrounds her soft blonde hair. My super hero is like a human like Pikachu that can look into the future. Here is my super hero.

Kapa Haka

Kia ora this is my first blog in Term 4. A few weeks / months ago there was a huge event in Dannevirke that gathered many Kapa groups together to perform for one another, we had two performance, one in the morning and one at night. Me personally, I like the adrenaline you get before hitting stage. Now we got a performance in two more weeks, we call it our family performance. We’ve been doing family performances since 2021, we do this to show our whanau what we’ve learnt along the way of being in our ropu. A few days before the performance we have a noho (kapa sleepover) we look over what we’ve learnt do some top drops (rehearse beginning to end) This would be our last noho, for this last noho we will be having Project Seagull (a fun surprise for new comers to our ropu) after both the performance and surprise there will be a prize-giving to acknowledge all the people who have made it this far and to give our year 8’s a goodbye.

Netball Season

We (Me & My Team) had our last game on Saturday. The game ended in a tie, but they were a pretty rough team. I’d say we gave them a good game or how our coach says “Gave them a run for their money.” Overall we came 3rd or 4th equal but other than that I’m looking forward to having the netball prize giving. Last year we went to the Adventure Park in Palmy, laser tag and had pizza for our prize giving. This year I’m looking forward to celebrating the teams hard work with my current teammates.

The Matariki Gala

A few weeks back there was a Matariki Gala at Foxton Beach School. Stands such as Korean waffles, real fruit ice cream and even a photo booth stood at the Gala. Me and some other year 8’s learnt some weaving a few days before the Matariki Gala to teach to other kids. If you looked in the hall you would see a Matariki art contest for the younger kids (Kotare kids). Some other kids performed ukulele, hip hop and even kapa haka. We got kapa kids from both primary and secondary school to come join us in our performance. At some point there was a lolly scramble and me personally really enjoyed that, and especially the photo booth.

June 2023

On Monday morning, 19 June. Some people (including me) went to participate in the Mural, Karakias were said and waiatas were sung. Over 100 kids helped with making the mural and about 20 kids helped sing some waiata. At the end of the Mural both the oldest and youngest kid cut the ribbon, the eldest being me.

I would say the most challenging thing for me was to try and build my confidence to sing a little bit louder and perform a little bit harder, but with all that aside I enjoyed the singing.

Next time I plan on being more confident to sing louder, when you get louder other people tend to sing more confidently.

Goodbye Mr. Stewie

On the last day of Term 1, our principal left our school after teaching there for about 25 years. Tears were shed when the day of his leaving had arrived. For that very day kids who had done Kapa Haka came together to sing a variety of waiata. Hours and weeks were put into their performance. Even Kapa kids from college came back for this event, kids our principal had taught. They all came together to give our principal the send off he needs.

Although this is a sad event, I think this is a good opportunity for not just our school but for our principal. We may be open to more options at school, and our principal can carry on with life without having to worry about us little rascals.

Even though this was many weeks ago, it had one big impact on Foxton Beach School.

We met our new principal that exact day, she was a deputy principal a few years ago until she left, a few years later she came back as our new principal. One week later we had one of our most amazing powhiri to welcome her back with a new title.

Kapa Haka

Lately I have been learning more about Kapa Haka and joined Te Roopu Haka O Te Awahou, the kapa haka group in Foxton Beach.

I decided to learn Kapa Haka because it is a part of New Zealand’s native culture, Maori. I have great determination for Kapa Haka, I first started Kapa Haka at the age of 8.

I’ve come a long way in Kapa Haka. It’s been four years since I started Kapa Haka, now I have one year left. Looking back from where I started I improved a big amount.

The most challenging thing is definitely the learning, the poi, the words, the whakaeke. Everything is very difficult at first, but later on you get better and better at it and it looks amazing once you perform on stage.

Next year when I go back to Kapa Haka, I will definitely be more confident. I was one of the quietest in Kapa Haka, next year I will be the only year 8 that’s been in Kapa Haka for more than 3 years, so I must show all the new Kapa babies to kowai ki runga (Chin up) and be confident.

About Me

Kia ora my name is Te Waipounamu, but everyone calls me Pounamu. I’m 12 years old and I’m a year 7 at Foxton Beach School. I have an older brother who is in college, and I come from a family of Maori.

At Foxton Beach School, I enjoy doing sports such as netball and basketball. At lunchtime I either play line tag or play piggy in the middle with my friends, I try my hardest in my subjects and hope to get the academic award at the end of the year.

If i’m not doing sports or on the internet im doing my arts and crafts, I like doing either scrapbooking with my cousin or sketching different types of landscapes. This term I’m looking forward to camp, were going to all different types of fun places.
